Saint-Nicolas-la-Chapelle is a commune with 454 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Savoie department in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Ugine in the arrondissement of Albertville .

geography

Saint-Nicolas-la-Chapelle is located in the Arly valley , about 51 km southeast of the city of Geneva and 53 km east-northeast of the associated prefecture of Chambéry (both as the crow flies). The village is located at around 940  m on a rock saddle above the Arly. The Massif des Aravis begins to the west of the village , on which the municipality extends to the Chaîne des Aravis . The municipality boundary runs about 100 m below the summit of the 2483  m high L'Étale mountain and forms the highest point there. In a south-westerly direction the Arly drains the valley and after 12 km you reach the capital of the canton Ugine and after 20 km the city of Albertville .

The neighboring municipalities are (from the north clockwise) La Giettaz , Flumet , Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe , Crest-Voland , Ugine and Manigod . The latter is in the neighboring Haute-Savoie department . Several hamlets and settlements also belong to the municipality :

  • Le Marteret ( 881  m )
  • Flumet d'Aval (about 950  m )
  • le Seuthenay (about 950  m )
  • Chaucisse (around 1300  m ) in a side valley of the Arrondine
  • Nanchard (approx. 1215  m ) on the western slope of the Arrondine valley

population

With 454 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saint-Nicolas-la-Chapelle is one of the small communities of Savoy. There have been several waves of emigration over the past two centuries, which have compounded the population decline due to war and rural exodus. The local residents of Saint-Nicolas-la-Chapelle are called Colatain (e) s in French .

history

The name of the parish goes back to a chapel that was dedicated to Nicholas of Myra . Until the 19th century, the upper Arly valley could only be reached via passes from the north, while a steep gorge below Saint-Nicolas blocked access. This unusual geographical position meant that in the Middle Ages the Saint-Nicolas area belonged to the lords of Faucigny , who lived in the Arve valley . The parish was initially subordinate to that of Flumet and became independent at the beginning of the 14th century.

The prayer house, which has meanwhile been converted into a church, turned out to be so dilapidated in 1766 that a new building was started in 1775. For the small, remote community, both the financing through donations and the transport of the building materials meant a special challenge. The new building, including the interior decoration, was completed around 1790, just at the beginning of the French Revolution . During the occupation of Savoia by the French troops and the ensuing de-Christianization , the inhabitants of Saint-Nicolas successfully hid the cult objects of the new church and offered protection to persecuted priests. In order not to be the target of looting and destruction like the surrounding villages, they also buried the church bells on private property and saved the rear wall of the altar by burning a pile of old wood in their place.

The hamlet of Chaucisse was first under the parish of St. Nicolas, but then built its own church of St-François-de-Sales in 1818 , which was recognized as an independent parish in 1828. Both churches were extensively restored in 2009/10.

The Arly Valley from Saint-Nicolas.

The incorporation of Savoia into France in 1860 assigned Saint-Nicolas-la-Chapelle together with the surrounding communities to the southern of the two newly created departments. Two years later, the construction of a road through the impassable gorge of the Arly began in order to remove the isolation of the upper Arly valley and to establish the transport connection to the Savoie department . The complex road construction was completed in 1886. It enabled new branches of the economy such as the demolition of slate in Saint-Nicolas at the beginning of the 20th century.

Culture and sights

Bell tower of the parish church of St. Nicolas

The parish church of St. Nicolas from the 18th century has a floor plan in the shape of the Latin cross , i.e. H. with a single nave and a transept. Similar to the church of Saint Théodule in Flumet , the main altar is covered by a canopy. The bell tower with a lantern top has a carillon, the bells of which were either re-cast from the old bells saved during the revolution or completely re-donated between 1819 and 1863. The parish church and its inventory were added to the list of Monuments historiques in 1989 .

Economy and Infrastructure

Agriculture in Saint-Nicolas-la-Chapelle represents a comparatively high proportion with around a quarter of all farms and cultivates the mountain pastures and wooded slopes above the village. Regional cheeses, namely Reblochon and Beaufort , whose protected designations of origin overlap in the area of Saint-Nicolas-la-Chapelle, are produced as an essential product of agriculture . There are no ski slopes or lifts in the municipality, but the place is marketed by the Espace Diamant winter sports area east of the Arly . There are two hotels in the village and the proportion of second homes and holiday apartments, at 60%, is similar to that in the neighboring communities.

traffic

The upper Arly Valley is still off the main regional arteries and railway lines. The D1212 (originally national road 212) runs through the valley and below the village, connecting the Arve valley via Megève in the north with the Isère valley and Albertville in the south. From this through road the 1 km long D113 leads uphill into the village.

The nearest possible motorway connections are the A430 (Albertville exit, 23 km away) and the A40 (exits 20 to 22, around 26 km away). The Albertville SNCF train station is suitable for reaching Saint-Nicolas-la-Chapelle by bus. Airports in the region are Geneva (78 km), Chambéry-Savoie (95 km) and Lyon-St-Exupéry (160 km).
