geography

location

Pallud is located at 484  m a few kilometers north of Albertville, 39 kilometers east-northeast of the prefecture of Chambéry and 61 km south-southeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). Pallud's neighboring parishes are Allondaz and Thénésol in the north, Césarches and Venthon in the east, Albertville in the south and Mercury in the west.

topography

The area of the 5.20 km² large municipal area includes an elevation in the easternmost foothills of the Bauges , a limestone massif in the foothills of the Alps . At 842  m, this elevation is much less pronounced than the neighboring mountain ranges and is home to a forest area, the Forêt du Tal . Its eastern and southern slopes form a valley shoulder between 480  m and 500  m , on which the Pallud settlement area is concentrated. The Arly Gorge in the east and the transition to the flat alluvial soil of the Isère in the south mark the municipal boundary on this side. The municipality is located within the Regional Nature Park Massif des Bauges ( French Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges ). 55.7% of the communal land is overgrown with forest, 40% is used for agriculture and 5.1% is built on.

Community structure

The hamlet settlements of La Biolle, Les Charles, Les Chapelles and the center of Pallud lie on the slope above the Arly . There are also other hamlets and farms spread over the less steep southern slope above the town center, including Lançon ( 670  m ), Bermond ( 660  m ) and Chacroix ( 546  m ).

history

Pallud was first mentioned in 1139 as Villa Palludis and is one of the many parishes in the Isère Valley that have existed at least since the High Middle Ages ( Ecclesia de Pallud , 1184). At the time of the Ancien Régime there was a small manor with a permanent house in Pallud , which belonged to the Baronnie von Chevron (today's neighboring parish of Mercury) and was under the suzerainty of the Counts of Savoy .

Attractions

The village church from the 19th century replaced a previous medieval building and is built in the neo-Romanesque style. The Château de Bongain stands on a rock on the outskirts and above the Arly gorge . After it was damaged during the French Revolution , the remaining structure served as the mayor's office ( mairie ) and village school for a long time .

With 780 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Pallud is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the population had declined slightly since Savoy was annexed to France (492 inhabitants were counted in 1861), a steady increase in population has been recorded again since the mid-1970s. The local residents of Pallud are called Pallurain (e) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Pallud was predominantly an agricultural village. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has mainly developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the neighboring Albertville.

The village is off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Albertville into the village and on to the various parts of Mercury. The nearest motorway connection to the A430 and a train station on the Saint-Pierre-d'Albigny – Bourg-Saint-Maurice railway line are in neighboring Albertville . Chambéry-Savoie (distance 63 km) and Geneva (96 km) are possible airports in the region .

In Pallud there is a primary school ( école primaire ).
