Bourg-Saint-Maurice ( Franco- Borg-Sant-Mori ) is a French municipality with 7302 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . The capital of the canton of the same name is located on the Isère in the upper part of the Tarentaise Valley, near the border with Italy . The Les Arcs winter sports region is located in the south of Bourg-Saint-Maurice .

history

The Romans founded the Bergintrum settlement in the Alpes Graiae province . According to the Antonini Itinerary , it was on the road between the cities of Mediolanum ( Milan ) and Lugdunum ( Lyon ). Later the place was called Saint-Maurice , named after Saint Mauritius ; the part of the name Bourg did not appear until the 15th century.

After the conquest by French troops, the place was called Nargue-Sarde from 1794. When it returned to the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1815 , the old name was reintroduced. In 1861 Bourg-Saint-Maurice finally came to France.

An economic boom began in the 1960s with the development of the Les Arcs winter sports area .

From 1962 the seventh battalion of the Chasseurs alpins was stationed in Bourg-Saint-Maurice. In 2012 it was relocated to Varces as part of a restructuring , which resulted in the departure of around 2,000 residents (soldiers and staff with their families).

Economy and Transport

The municipality is economically heavily dependent on tourism and the troops stationed here, which is why the service sector clearly predominates. International canoe slalom competitions take place regularly on a whitewater facility in the Isère , for example the 2002 World Championships. The Tour du Mont-Blanc circular alpine route leads through the Vallée des Glaciers, which is part of the municipality .

Bourg-Saint-Maurice is the starting point of the pass roads to the Cormet de Roselend , the Col de l'Iseran and the Col du Petit Saint-Bernard . The Route nationale 90 leads to Albertville and Grenoble . The Bourg-Saint-Maurice train station is the terminus of the SNCF train line through the Tarentaise to Albertville. Due to its high tourist importance, it is served by TGV - Thalys - and Eurostar trains, which run continuously to Paris , Brussels , London and Amsterdam . A funicular provides the connection to Les Arcs in the high season (December to April as well as July and August).

Partner communities

Partner municipalities of Bourg-Saint-Maurice are Altensteig in the German state Baden-Württemberg and Pinon in the Aisne department .
