Jean-Frédéric Chapuis (born March 2, 1989 in Bourg-Saint-Maurice ) is a French - Swiss freestyle skier . He specializes in the discipline of ski cross . His greatest successes are the world championship title in 2013, the Olympic victory in 2014 as well as winning the World Cup discipline in the 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2017/18 seasons.

biography

Chapuis was an alpine ski racer at the beginning of his sports career . From December 2004 he took part in FIS races and national junior races. He won two FIS races and took part in the 2008 Junior World Championship in Formigal , where 12th place in the combined ranking was his best result. Successes in the European Cup races, in which he has participated since January 2008, failed to materialize. At the end of the 2009/10 season he switched to the freestyle discipline ski cross.

Chapuis made his debut in the Freestyle World Cup on December 18, 2010 in San Candido , where he finished 8th and immediately won his first World Cup points. Another eighth place was added a month later in Les Contamines . In the winter of 2011/12 he was in the top ten five times in the World Cup. He achieved his first podium on February 26, 2012 in Grasgehren (3rd place). Due to an injury, Chapuis missed the start of the 2012/13 season . Nevertheless, he was nominated for the 2013 World Championships in Voss and surprisingly won the gold medal. A week later, on March 17, 2013, he won a World Cup race for the first time in Åre .

At the 2014 Winter Olympics , Chapuis won ahead of his French compatriots Arnaud Bovolenta and Jonathan Midol . During the 2013/14 World Cup season , he won a race in La Plagne . He won the silver medal at the 2015 World Championships on Kreischberg . After the World Cup, he achieved five podium places in the second half of the 2014/15 World Cup winter (including four wins in a row), which was the first time that he won the ski cross discipline. Chapuis was similarly successful in the 2015/16 season : he won four races and achieved two more podium finishes, which meant that he repeated winning the discipline ranking.

The 2016/17 World Cup season also went according to his plans: Chapuis was on the podium in six of 14 races held, four of which were the winner. This was the third time in a row that he won the discipline ranking. However , he was unlucky at the 2017 World Championships in the Sierra Nevada at the end of the season. After setting the best time in qualifying, he was eliminated in the round of 16 and only finished 25th.

Private

His mother, Katharina Güller, is a Swiss woman who taught at the Arosa primary school for many years . As a result, Jean-Frédéric Chapuis, who grew up in Val Thorens , speaks fluent German and has both French and Swiss citizenship. Before switching to ski cross, he occasionally competed in alpine races for Swiss-Ski .
