Gold medal of the FIS

The Freestyle Skiing World Championships are organized by the International Ski Federation FIS . The athletes are currently competing in freestyle skiing in the disciplines of aerials, moguls, halfpipe, dual moguls and ski cross. In recent years, competitions in the ballet discipline have also been held.

History of the World Championships

The Freestyle Skiing World Championships were held from January 31, 1986 in the French winter sports resort of Tignes .

The World Championships of 1988 took place during the Olympic Games in Calgary instead and served as a demonstration competitions for inclusion as an Olympic sport. Since the introduction of the World Championships, there have been continuous changes in terms of the mode and number of competitions. The so-called “classic” competitions were held at the World Championships from 1986 to 1997. These included the moguls , jumping , ballet and combination competitions , with the combination rating consisting of adding up the three remaining competitions.

Due to the lack of interest, the combination was removed from the program in 1997. In 1999 in Meiringen the double hump slope (Dual Moguls) celebrated its premiere and there were temporarily four disciplines again. After the ballet (Acro) was deleted from the program due to insufficient public interest and pressure from the national ski associations, the number of competitions was again limited to three. After a brief pause for reflection, the FIS decided to adapt to the interests of the new generation of freestylers. This development was taken into account at the FIS Congress in 2002 and the booming disciplines of ski cross and halfpipe were included in the World Cup and World Championship programs . Both competitions were successfully integrated into the World Cup in the 2002/03 season and celebrated their world championship premiere in Ruka in 2005 . In 2015, the Freestyle Skiing World Championships will be held together with the Snowboard World Championships for the first time .
