The Deer Valley Resort is a winter sports area and is part of the Wasatch Range in the Rocky Mountains . It is located 58 km east of Salt Lake City in the city of Park City , Utah . It is one of the top ski resorts in North America.

During the 2002 Winter Olympics , the Deer Valley Resort hosted freestyle skiing competitions and alpine skiing slalom competitions .

Furnishing

The Deer Valley Resort competes for an upscale crowd with a number of other major ski resorts nearby, including a free shuttle, fine cuisine, and boutiques. Deer Valley Resort is one of three ski areas in the United States, along with the Alta and Mad River Glen areas, that prohibit snowboarding. The four-time world champion and Olympic champion from 1952 Stein Eriksen from Norway gave its name to Stein Eriksen Lodge , and was director of the ski area until his death in 2015.

Deer Valley uses more equipment than other ski resorts in the Wasatch Range and limits ticket sales to 7,500 visitors per day to avoid overcrowding. A total of 50,470 skiers per hour are carried on the lifts, which is around 50% more than in the neighboring Park City Mountain Resort . The Deer Valley Resort has 21 chair lifts and a gondola for four people per lift.

history

In the 1930s, Deer Valley Resort started skiing. In 1936 and 1937, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) built the first ski slopes and other facilities. The first ski lifts were built in 1946, these were built from pine wood by residents Robert Emmett Burns and Otto Carpenter . The ski area was called the Snow Park Ski Area , which was valid until 1969. In 1981 Edgar Stern founded the Deer Valley Resort in the same area. It has now been expanded to six mountains, 380 hectares of slopes and 270 hectares of snow-making areas. The total area of the area is 820 hectares.

Deer Valley opened in 1981 on Bald Eagle Mountain and Bald Mountain with five lifts, including the Burns Double , the only remaining original lift on the mountain. A year later the area was expanded with the Sterling Lift and in 1983 with the Clipper. The first major expansion of the area took place in 1984 with the Mayflower Lift on Bald Mountain.

In 1991 the first high-speed chairlift, the Carpenter Express , was built on Bald Eagle Mountain. The resort also expanded with the Red Cloud and Viking lifts on Flagstaff Mountain . New mogul slopes were created in this area. The Crown Point Lift was also built. Another expansion took place in 1993 with the Northside Express Lift .

In 1996 the Carpenter Express and Wasatch were replaced by two new Garaventa CTEC high-speed chairlifts.

In the 1998/99 season, the Deer Valley was expanded to include two more mountains. On the Little Baldy Peak were Deer Crest train and cable car Jordanelle Express opened.

At the turn of the millennium, many more new lifts were built in the ski area. In 1999 the Homestake Triple was replaced by a chairlift. In 2000, the Silver Lake Express replaced the Clipper Triple to provide a direct link between Snow Park Base Lodge and Silver Lake Lodge . The Quincy and Ruby were built on Flagstaff Mountain in 2001 and 2002, respectively. The Sultan Express replaced the original Sultan Lift in 2005. Sterling was upgraded and expanded in 2006.

In 2007 the area was expanded again and a sixth mountain was attached to the Deer Valley. The Lady Morgan Express , a chairlift accessible from Flagstaff Mountain and Empire Canyon , created 200 hectares of new kilometers of slopes.

The Deer Crest chairlift was upgraded in 2012 and renamed the Mountaineer Express .

On October 3, 2014, Deer Valley Resort announced that it had reached an agreement to purchase Solitude Mountain Resort ; on May 1, 2015 operations there was taken over.

In August 2017, the Deer Valley Resort was sold to the newly formed Alterra Mountain Company , a joint venture between KSL Capital Partners and Intrawest Resort Holdings .
