The Utah Olympic Oval is an ice rink in Oquirrh Park in Salt Lake City (Kearns), Utah . After the 104th IOC session, at which Salt Lake City was chosen as the venue, planning and construction of the hall for the 2002 Winter Olympics began . The hall, which is 1425 meters above sea level , includes the 400-meter-long speed skating rink and two indoor ice hockey rinks . The track is enclosed by a 442 meter long athletics track. The Olympic Oval offers 3,000 seats for spectators.

The first international competition was the 2001 Individual Distance World Championships . 7 world records were set straight away this weekend . Catriona LeMay Doan over 500 meters and 2 × 500 meters, Monique Garbrecht-Enfeldt over 1000 meters, Gunda Niemann-Stirnemann over 5000 meters, Hiroyasu Shimizu over 500 meters and 2 × 500 meters and Jeremy Wotherspoon over 1000 meters. Thanks to its altitude, the hall is considered the fastest speed skating rink in the world , especially among sprinters .

winter Olympics

In 2002 the decisions in speed skating were held in the hall . The number of seats was increased to 6500 especially for the games. All tickets found a buyer and allowed over 53,000 viewers to attend the competitions live. Except for the 2 × 500 meters, world records were set on all routes. Among them Claudia Pechstein's world record with 6: 46.91 minutes over 5000 meters, the German record that is still valid today .
