Christine Nesbitt - with 2 × gold and 1 × bronze, the most successful female athlete of the individual distance world championships

The 12th Individual Distance World Championships were held from March 12th to 15th, 2009 in Richmond, Canada ( Richmond Olympic Oval ). The hall was built specifically for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and completed in 2008. The individual distance world championship was the first ISU event in this hall and at the same time the dress rehearsal for the upcoming Olympic Games.

The individual distance World Championships are the last international competitions of the current season. It is important to be the fastest on the individual routes. The championship for "specialists" provides:

  • for the women 2 × 500, 1000, 1500, 3000 and 5000 meters and the team pursuit over 6 laps
  • for the men 2 × 500, 1000, 1500, 5000 and 10000 meters and the team pursuit over 8 laps
