Shani Earl Davis (born August 13, 1982 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American speed skater .

Career

Davis mastered roller skating at the age of three and began speed skating at the age of six . He ran both on the long tracks and on the short track . In 1999 he made it into the US national teams of both sports. In 2000 he first took part in the Junior World Championships in speed skating and was a participant in the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City .

Davis experienced his breakthrough in 2004 when he became world champion over 1500 meters at the individual distance world championship in Seoul and won the silver medal at the all- around world championship in Hamar . In 2005 Davis set world records over 1500 meters and 1000 meters and became world champion in all- around for the first time in Moscow . He defended that title in 2006 in Calgary .

At the Olympic Winter Games in Turin in 2006 , Davis was Olympic champion over 1000 meters. This made him the first black Olympic champion in an individual sport at the Winter Games. On his world record course of 1500 meters, Davis won silver behind the Italian surprise Olympic champion Enrico Fabris . The individual distance world championship in Salt Lake City completed Davis 2007 with gold medals in the 1000 meters and 1500 meters. In 2008 in Nagano, he won another title over 1000 meters. In 2009 he won the 1500 meters in Vancouver .

In 2009 Davis won the title at the Sprint World Championship in Moscow . After Eric Heiden , Davis became the first man who could win both the title at the all- around world championships and the sprint world championships. For his success in 2009 he was awarded the Oscar Mathisen Memorial Trophy . At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , Davis repeated his results from the previous Olympic Games.
