Dan Jansen
Daniel Erwin "Dan" Jansen (born June 17, 1965 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) is a former American speed skater .
Dan Jansen was inspired to start speed skating through his sister Jane . In his first start at the Olympic Games in 1984 in Sarajevo , he finished sixth over 500 meters and fourth over 1000 meters. Four years later , he was considered the favorite for the 500 meters and 1000 meters in Calgary . On the day of the 500 meter race, his sister Jane died of leukemia . Dan Jansen ended the race with a fall. A few days later he could not finish the race even over 1000 meters and was eliminated due to a fall.
Also in the 1992 Games in Albertville he was his favorite role not meet again and remained without a medal. At the 1994 winter games in Lillehammer , he won the longed-for gold medal in the last race of his career. He won over 1000 meters in world record time.
After his career as an athlete, Jansen became a commentator on NBC and created the Dan Jansen Foundation to fight leukemia.
