Egbert Rolf "Erben" Wennemars (born November 1, 1975 in Dalfsen ) is a Dutch speed skater . He specializes in sprint and medium distances (500 m, 1000 m and 1500 m).

He is the first speed skater to cover the 1,500 meter distance in less than 1 minute and 50 seconds. His time of 1: 49.89 minutes in 1997 was not recognized as an official world record. During the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano , Wennemars dislocated his shoulder when the Norwegian Grund Njøs collided with him in the 500 meter race. Wennemars could therefore not compete over 1000 and 1500 meters.

He achieved his first major success at the 2003 World Championships in Berlin , when he won the gold medal over 1000 and 1500 meters. A year later he was Sprint World Champion in Nagano; he successfully defended this title in Salt Lake City in 2005 . At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin Wennemars won two bronze medals, over 1000 meters and in the team pursuit (together with Sven Kramer , Carl Verheijen , Mark Tuitert and Rintje Ritsma ).

Wennemars is Dutch Sportsman of the Year 2003 and was voted Dutch Speed Skater of the Year in 2003, 2004 and 2005. In public he is known for speaking extremely quickly and answering like a shot.
