Lorentzen had his first international success at the Junior World Championships 2010 in Moscow . There he won the gold medal in the team pursuit. In November 2010 he started the World Cup for the first time in Heerenveen and finished 23rd place over 5000 m, 11th place in the B group over 1000 m and sixth place in the B group over 1500 m. At the Junior World Championships in 2011 in Seinäjoki , he won the bronze medal in the 1500 m and the silver medal in the team pursuit. In the following year he won the gold medal at the Junior World Championships in Obihiro and the gold medal in the team pursuit and came 24th over 1500 m at the individual distance world championships in Heerenveen. In the 2013/14 season he achieved tenth place overall in the 1000m World Cup with four top ten placements. He also achieved his first podium finish in the World Cup in March 2014 in Heerenveen with third place in the team pursuit. His best placings at his first Olympic participation in Sochi in February 2014 were 11th place over 1000 m and fifth place in the team pursuit. At the Sprint World Championships 2015 in Astana he finished 13th and at the Individual Distance World Championships 2015 in Heerenveen he finished 22nd over 1500 m and 18th over 1000 m.
In the following year Lorentzen ran at the sprint world championships in Seoul on the 22nd place and at the single distance world championships in Kolomna on the 20th place over 1000 m. In the 2016/17 season he reached over 1000 m with seven top ten placements, fourth place in the World Cup over 1000 m. He came on the podium for the first time in Berlin with places three and two, each over 1000 m in the World Cup singles. In January 2017 he was fifth in the sprint all- around at the European all- around championship in Heerenveen. The following month he finished 22nd over 1500 m at the Individual Distance World Championships in Gangwon , seventh over 500 m and sixth over 1000 m and won the silver medal at the Sprint World Championships in Calgary . At the beginning of the 2017/18 season he won his first World Cup victory over 500 m in Heerenveen and also took third place over 1000 m and second place in the team pursuit. At the following World Cup in Stavanger he won the 500 m and 1000 m and again took second place in the team pursuit. In the further course of the season he was third in Calgary over 1000 m, and in Erfurt second over 1000 m and first over 500 m. At the season highlight, the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang in February 2018 , he won gold over 500 m, setting a new Olympic record with a time of 34.41 seconds. Four days later he won the silver medal just behind Kjeld Nuis in the 1000 m run . Shortly afterwards, he won his first world title at the Sprint World Championships in Changchun . At the World Cup finals in Minsk he won the team sprint and took third place over 1000 m. At the end of the season he won the overall World Cup and the 500 m World Cup. In the world cup over 1000 m he finished second.
After third and first place over 500 m and second place in the team sprint in Obihiro at the beginning of the 2018/19 season, Lorentzen won the team sprint in Tomaszów Mazowiecki and also took third place there over 500 m and 1000 m. At the all-around European championship in January 2019 in Klobenstein , he won the silver medal in the sprint all-around event. At the individual distance world championships in 2019 in Inzell , he won the silver medal over 500 m and also took fourth place over 1000 m. At the end of February 2019 he was fourth at the Sprint World Championship in Heerenveen . He finished the season in fifth place in the 1000 m World Cup and third in the 500 m World Cup.
Lorentzen was six times Norwegian champion in the sprint all-around competition (2012, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019), five times over 1000 m (2012, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019), four times over 2 × 500 m (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018) and once over 500 m (2019).
