Culture
Obihiro is known for the unusual Ban'ei horse races that are held at Obihiro Racecourse. Around 1900 farmers from Hokkaido began to have their workhorses compete against each other at festive events in order to determine the strongest and fastest draft horse. From this, today's races gradually developed. Instead of an oval racetrack, Ban'ei races are held on a straight 200 m long sand track with two obstacles in the form of sand-covered ramps. Large, strong cold-blooded horses pull sleds that weigh up to a ton. Most of the time they walk at one step . Therefore, spectators can watch the races by walking alongside the horses. Obihiro Racecourse was renovated in 2007 and is sponsored by the city of Obihiro so that this culturally anchored sport is not lost.
