Tomamae ( Japanese 苫 前 町 , - chō ) is a small town in Tomamae County in Rumoi Sub-prefecture on Hokkaidō.
etymology
The name Tomamae comes from Ainu toma-oma-i , which means "place with the Corydalis ambigua ", which are also the city flowers.

The city is traversed by the Kotambetsu ( 古 丹 別 川 , -gawa ).
history
March 1880, the town hall was built and the mura (village) Tomamae ( 苫 前 村 , -mura ) was created. In December of the same year, Yagishiri ( 焼 尻 村 , -mura ) and Teuri ( 天 売 村 , -mura ) were released as independent villages on the offshore islands of the same name, Teuri and Yagishiri . August 1888 the village of Shiroshitomari ( 白志 泊 村 , -mura ) was incorporated. On February 3, 1894, the village of Haboro ( 羽 ) 村 , -mura ) was founded and on July 15, 1897 it was spun off as an independent and Shiroshitomari was dissolved. On April 1, 1902, the village of Rikibiru ( 力 昼 村 , -mura ) is incorporated and Tomamae is appointed 2nd class community. On April 1, 1915 he was appointed first class community.
From 9 to 14 December 1915 the Sankebetsu brown bear incident ( b 別 羆 事件 , Sankebetsu higuma jiken ) took place in the district of Sankebetsu , in which 7 people were killed by a brown bear weighing 380 kg and 2.7 m tall and were seriously injured.
On October 1, 1948, he was appointed Chō.
Attractions
In Tomamae there is a wooden statue of an eleven-headed Kannon ( 木造 十 一面 観 音 立 像 , mokuzō jūichimen Kannon ritsuzō ). This was given in 1996 to the now abandoned temple Kimpō-in ( 金宝 院 ). On March 20 of the same year, it was named the Prefecture's Material Cultural Treasure, making it the first.
traffic
Tomamae is connected to the national road 232 to Teshio and Rumoi . Prefecture roads that cross the town limits are prefecture roads 437, 483, 582, 741, 742, 1049, 1062 and 1063. Along the 1049 are the ruins of the Sankebetsu settlement, so the road is also Bear Road ( ベ ア ー ロ ー ド , Beā rōdo ) and is signposted with pictures of bears.
All previous train connections to Tomamae have been discontinued. The 1987 fully closed Haboro line of the state JNR to Rumoi and Horonobe stopped at the Rikibiru station, the Ban'yanosawa station, the Kotambetsu, Uehira, Tomamae stations and the Okotsu station. Private railways were the Kotambetsu Shirin Tetsudō ( 古 丹 別 森林 鉄 道 , dt. "Forest Railway Kotambetsu") and the Haboro Tankō Tetsudō ( 羽 幌 炭 礦 鉄 道 , dt. "Coal Railway Haboro") with the Kami-Haboro Line ( 上 羽 幌 線 ).
economy
Tomamae's main industries are inshore fishing, agriculture (mainly rice), dairy farming, and forestry.
A large part of the energy is generated by wind turbines .
education
Tomamae is home to the Kotambetsu and Tomamae Elementary Schools, the Kotambetsu and Tomamae Middle Schools, and the Hokkaidō-Tomamae Commercial High School.
Tomamae is home to the Earthquake - Diastrophism (Earth's Crustal Movement) Observation Station of the Science Faculty of Hokkaido University .
Town twinning
Tomamae's twin town has been the small town of Nagashime in Mie Prefecture, with a population of around 15,000, since 1981 . The former was incorporated into Kuwana in 2004 , so that this city with more than 140,000 inhabitants took over this role.
