Haboro ( Japanese 羽 幌 町 , - chō ) is a small town in the district of Tomamae in the Rumoi sub-prefecture on Hokkaidō .

etymology

The name Haboro comes from Ainu haboropetsu , which means "basin of a wide river".

Yagishiri

The offshore islands Teuri ( 天 売 島 , -tō ) and Yagishiri ( 焼 尻 島 , -tō ) belong to the urban area of ​​Haboro . Both belong to the Shokambetsu-Teuri-Yagishiri Quasi National Park ( 暑 寒 別 天 売 焼 尻 国 定 公園 ).

Furthermore, within the city limits, there is the 1,032 m high mountain Pisshiri ( ピ ッ シ リ 山 ), Ainu for "mountain of stones", which at the same time forms the border between Embetsu , Haboro and Horokanai . Rivers are the Haboro ( 羽 幌 川 , -gawa ) and the Chikubetsu ( 築 別 川 , -gawa ).

history

On February 3, 1894, Haboro was founded as a district of the village of Tomamae and on July 15, 1897 , it was spun off as an independent village ( 羽 幌 村 , Haboro-mura ). On September 19, 1901, the district of Shokambetsu was spun off as an independent village. On April 1, 1902, Haboro was appointed second class community, April 1, 1909, first class community, and July 1, 1921, Chō. On April 1, 1955, Teuri ( 天 売 村 , -mura ) and on April 1, 1959 Yagishiri ( 焼 尻 村 , -mura ) are incorporated. Both were spun off from Tomamae in December 1880 and on April 1, 1906, were appointed second class parishes.

Haboro is connected to the national road 232 to Teshio and Rumoi . Prefecture streets that cross the town limits are prefecture streets 255, 356, 437, 547, 548, 612, 741, 747, 762 and 866.

By means of the Haboro Enkai Ferry ( 羽 幌 沿海 フ ェ リ ー , Haboro enkai ferī , dt. " Coastal ferry Haboro") there is a ferry service to the two offshore islands Teuri and Yagishiri.

All previous train connections to Haboro have been discontinued. The Haboro line of the state JNR to Rumoi and Horonobe , which was completely closed on March 30, 1987, stopped at Haboro and Chikubetsu stations. The Haboro line was originally used to transport coal. The 1941 opened Haboro Tankō Tetsudō ( 羽 幌 炭 礦 鉄 道 , Eng . "Coal Railway Haboro") was also given up in 1970 when the coal mines were closed. This operated the lines Chikubetsu line ( 築 別 駅 , Chikubetsu-sen ) and Akebono line ( 曙 駅 , Akebono-sen ) and drove in addition to the Chikubetsu station eight more. Others were the Chikubetsu Shinrin Tetsudō ( 築 別 森林 鉄 道 , German "Chikubetsu Forest Railway"). In 1962 the JNR started the Meiu Line ( 名 羽 線 , Meiu-sen ) as an extension of the Shinmei Line , but it was never completed.

The city's main industries are fishing, agriculture and tourism, especially to the quasi-national park.

education

In Haboro there are the primary schools Haboro, Teuri and Yagishiri, the middle schools Haboro, Teuri and Yagishiri, and the high schools Hokkaidō-Teuri and Hokkaidō-Haboro. The first is borne by the city and the second by the prefecture.

Town twinning

On September 11, 1979, Taira Village in Toyama Prefecture became a twin town . When it was incorporated into the city of Nanto, which has 50,000 inhabitants, in 2004 , the status was transferred to it.

On October 1, 1980, the small town of Uchinada in Ishikawa Prefecture became a sister city.
