investment

The east-west facing station is located near the harbor basin and has three tracks, two of which are used for passenger traffic. These are located on the main platform and on a side platform that is connected to the reception building on the south side of the facility by a covered pedestrian overpass . To the north of it was a freight yard ; the tracks as well as the company building and a turntable have now been removed. The pedestrian overpass used to cross the rear part of the freight station and reached as far as the platform of the Haboro line , which was closed in 1987 and whose track branched off just to the east of the facility.

history

The Railway Authority (later the Ministry of Railways ) opened the section between Fukagawa and Rumoi on November 23, 1910 . The station was the terminus for almost eleven years, until the extension to Mashike was commissioned on November 5, 1921. The first section of the Haboro line to Ōtodo was opened on October 25, 1927. However, in the first few years the route ran around 200 meters from the station along the bank of the Rumoi-gawa river; the connection to the Rumoi main line took place at a siding 1.4 km further east.

In 1941 the state took over three short connecting railways in the port area, which had been built eleven years earlier by the private company Rumoi Tetsudō . On December 9, 1941, the Haboro line received a new route, which enabled a direct connection to the Rumoi station. Nine days later, the Teshio Tankō Tetsudō opened a 25.4 km long branch line. It led from Rumoi to several coal mines north of the city and was in operation until July 31, 1967. The Japanese State Railways shut down the entire length of the Haboro Line on March 30, 1987. Two days later, as part of the privatization of the state railway, the station became the property of the new company JR Hokkaido. On March 31, 1999, JR Freight closed the freight yard.

The section between Rumoi and Mashike was closed on December 5, 2016 and replaced by a bus line.
