The Rumoi Main Line ( Japanese 留 萌 本 線 , Rumoi-honsen ) is a railway line on the Japanese island of Hokkaidō , which is operated by the Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido). It connects Fukagawa with Rumoi .

The Rumoi main line, laid in Cape Gauge (1067 mm), is 50.1 km long and, with the exception of a few switches, is completely single-track. It begins in Fukagawa , where it branches off the main Hakodate line . It first crosses the northernmost part of the Ishikari plain , then the foothills of the Mashike mountain range. Through the narrow Rumoi valley, she reaches the port city of Rumoi . Twelve train stations and stops are served in passenger transport, the route is not electrified. Until December 5, 2016, the route from Rumoi continued along the coast of the Sea of Japan to Mashike ; this now disused section was 16.7 km long.

Trains

Daily run eight pairs of trains in regional transport between the stations Fukagawa and Rumoi . Six of these continued to Mashike until the partial shutdown . Are used diesel railcars the type KIHA 54 in the one-man operation.

In December 1998 came during the filming of the morning drama Suzuran the television channel NHK , a train with the steam locomotive C12 66 on the Rumoi Main Line used. Due to the success of the television series, JR Hokkaido offered nostalgic trips between Fukagawa and Mashike from May 1999 to September 2006. Since 2001, the Norokko diesel nostalgia train has been running on weekends and public holidays in April and May (especially during Golden Week ) from Asahikawa via Fukagawa to Mashike.

In 1896, the Japanese Reichstag passed the Hokkaidō Railway Construction Act, which obliged the state to promote the island's economic development by building railway lines. About ten years later, the Railway Authority (later the Ministry of Railways ) began building the Rumoi Line ( 留 萌 線 , Rumoi-sen ). In addition to the development of the Teshio province , it was intended to transport coal and wood to the port of Rumoi. The section between Fukagawa and Rumoi went into operation on November 23, 1910, the section between Rumoi and Mashike followed on November 5, 1921.

According to project 135 listed in the appendix to the revised Railway Construction Act of 1922, the Rumoi Line was to be extended along the coast of the Sea of Japan to Sapporo . However, due to a lack of demand, this project was never realized. In 1931, the line was given its current name, Rumoi Main Line, after several branch lines were added (these have now all been closed). On March 14, 1946, a train derailed on the bridge over the Nobusha-gawa between Reuke and Shaguma and fell into the river. 17 people were killed and 97 others were injured.

On November 19, 1956, the Japanese State Railways began using diesel multiple units. From 1961 to 1986 express trains ran from Rumoi via Fukagawa to Sapporo (and sporadically on to Otaru ). As part of the privatization of the state railways, the line went into the possession of the new company JR Hokkaido on April 1, 1987 . Twelve years later, JR Freight shut down the Rumoi freight yard. Due to record high snowfall, operations had to be stopped on January 3, 2013 on the entire Rumoi main line; the Fukagawa – Rumoi section could only be released again after eight days, and the rest of the route only after 15 days.

JR Hokkaido announced in April 2016 that it would close the 16.7 km long section between Rumoi and Mashike and replace it with a bus line. This measure was implemented on December 5, 2016. Two weeks earlier, JR Hokkaido announced that the remaining section of the Rumoi main line between Fukagawa and Rumoi should also be closed by 2019 at the latest.
