Asahikawa ( Japanese 旭川 市 , - shi ) is a city in the Kamikawa sub-prefecture on the island of Hokkaidō . It is the second largest city on the island after the capital Sapporo .
geography
The city is 116 meters above sea level in the Kamikawa Basin ( 上 川 盆地 Kamikawa-bonchi ) and about 60 km from the nearest coast on the river of the same name. The river was called by Ainu Chiu Petsu (German: wave flow ). However, this was misunderstood as Chup Petsu ( Sun River ) so it was called Asahikawa ( Sunrise River). Nearby is the 2,290 m high Asahidake mountain .

The climate is a cool, moderate monsoon climate with continental features. The winters are cold and snowy, temperatures in January are -4 ° C during the day and -13 ° C at night. In summer it is quite warm with around 20 ° C (25 ° C during the day, 15 ° C at night). The Asahikawa Station is located on the southern edge of the city center and is one of the most important hubs of the rail network in Hokkaido. This is where the Hakodate main line , Sōya main line and the Furano line meet. The main Sekihoku line branches off at Shin-Asahikawa Station .
Asahikawa can be reached via the Dōō Highway , as well as National Road 12 and National Roads 39, 40, 233, 237, 333, 452.
