Suwon is the largest city and capital of Gyeonggi-do Province in South Korea . It is located 48 km south of Seoul and is connected to their subway network with line 1. During the soccer world championship in 2002 four games took place in the Suwon World Cup stadium , which opened on May 13, 2001 .

Samsung Electronics is headquartered in Suwon.

Attractions

The main attraction of Suwon is the Hwaseong Fortress , which was built by King Jeongjo from 1794 to 1796 . Its 5.7 km long wall originally enclosed the entire city and has 4 gates. The fortress was damaged during the Japanese colonial period and the Korean War , but it was restored afterwards. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997 .

Since 2019 a 33 meter high copy of the 15-meter-high stands Seepark tower with Oekostation the German sister city of Freiburg in Suwon in Gwanggyo Lake Park. It was designed by the same architect behind the Freiburg Tower, Richard Kramer, and is called the Gwanggyo Lake Park Observatory . It has an elevator, a café and space for exhibitions. There is also a new library in the park, for which Freiburg has contributed some books. They are on a shelf that is built like a small lake park tower.

Suwon is known for Suwon- Galbi , a variation of the Galbi commonly used in Korea.

Sports

For the fifth time after 2008 , 2009 , 2010 and 2011 , the second three-cushion World Cup of the year took place from September 18 to 23, 2012 , in which the world's best compete in a pile-up . The winner of the previous tournament in February 2012 in Antalya , Turkey was the Korean Choi Sung-won . The title winner in Suwon was the Swede Torbjörn Blomdahl .
