Lake park tower

Seeparkturm (2013)

The Seeparkturm is a 15 meter high wooden observation tower in the Seepark in Freiburg im Breisgau . It offers a good overview of the entire park area, the city of Freiburg with the Black Forest in the background and west to the Kaiserstuhl and the Vosges. It was built in 1986 on the occasion of the State Garden Show on a small elevation on the north shore of the lake according to plans by the architects Heinz Hilmer and Christoph Sattler , the construction costs at that time were 100,000 DM .

On June 14, 2003, the tower burned down as a result of arson , and the perpetrator was caught that same night. It was rebuilt using the old ring foundation by the architect Richard Kramer and the carpentry Gampp from Schluchsee . The original plans had been destroyed half a year before the fire, but there were still old structural plans for the tower. Using photos and his own memories, the architect managed to reconstruct the building true to the original. The Badische Gemeinde-Versicherungs-Verband as fire insurer for the city administration bore the costs of € 200,000. The tower reopened on June 29, 2004.

In January 2011 the tower was closed for over six months because rotten, load-bearing wooden parts had to be replaced and better protected against moisture. The truck crane , which was needed to lift the roof, could not be set up in a stable manner for a long time due to rain, so that half a year was not enough. However, the tower is now accessible again.

In February 2017, strangers removed the screws from two railings. After this was discovered, the tower was locked. In September 2017, the tower was closed again because the stability of the central viewing platform was no longer guaranteed due to rot. It has been accessible again since April 2018.

In winter the hill on which the tower is located is used by Freiburg children for tobogganing.

Since 2019, a 33-meter-high copy of the tower with the eco-station has stood by a lake in Freiburg's South Korean twin town Suwon . It was designed by the same architect of the Freiburg Tower and is called Gwanggyo Lake Park Observatory . It has an elevator, a café and space for exhibitions. There is also a new library in Gwanggyo Park, for which Freiburg has contributed some books. They are on a shelf that is built like a small lake park tower.
