Seepark Betzenhausen, Flückigersee

The Seepark in the Freiburg district of Betzenhausen is the former site of the State Garden Show in 1986. It consists of a total of around 35 hectares of local recreation area with an approximately 10 hectare artificial lake, the Flückigersee . In the northeast is the 15-meter-high Seeparkturm .

Up until the beginning of the 20th century, agriculture was mainly carried out on the area of today's lake park. However, since the gravel ground there was only poorly suited for the cultivation of grain, the Flückiger company settled here in the 1920s to mine sand and gravel. With the increasing expansion of the city towards the west, the area was always between the buildings, so that in the 1970s the gravel mining was gradually stopped in order to create a park.

This began at the beginning of the 1980s, but it was not until the successful application to host the State Garden Show in 1986 that it was designed to the extent that it still exists today. The state horticultural show counted around two million visitors. In the course of this redesign, 260 sequoias were also planted, many of which have since fallen victim to drought and disease. The gravelly ground was also not ideal for the trees. After up to 42 more sequoias had to be felled in 2018, trees are to be planted in the future that can cope with increasing heat and drought.

In the east there is a rose garden, which was newly laid out in 2011 and named after the founder and honorary citizen as Eugen Martin Anlage .

In July 2019, the wooden walkway to the rotunda, from where the pontoon walkway starts, was closed due to its dilapidation.

At the end of 2018, the forest pavilion on the south side was closed because vandalism had destroyed glass panes and threatened to fall. In addition, residents have long complained of disturbances at night.

Japanese garden

In 1990 a 3600 m² Japanese garden was designed in the west of the area due to the town twinning with the Japanese city of Matsuyama . It was planned by the Japanese garden architect Yoshinori Tokumoto from Matsuyama and is a gift from the twin city. In the autumn of 1989 it was laid out by three Japanese gardeners and ten Freiburg gardeners from the gardening authority.

The large rocks were selected at the Schauinsland and the stone lanterns are originals from Japan. Gardeners from the horticultural department at the Tokumoto horticultural company in Matsuyama learned how to care for them.
