Betzenhausen is a western district of Freiburg im Breisgau formed from the two districts of Alt-Betzenhausen in the west and Betzenhausen-Bischofslinde in the east .
Neighboring districts are Mooswald in the north, the Stühlinger in the east, Weingarten in the south and Lehen in the west.
history
Betzenhausen was first mentioned in writing in a deed of donation from Otto I to Einsiedeln Abbey in 972. The small village belonged to the city of Freiburg for more than 400 years from 1381, before becoming an independent rural community in 1807.
As early as the end of the 19th century, due to the poor economic situation, the desire to rejoin the city of Freiburg was growing. However, the community had a number of wishes to the city, which they made a condition for the new incorporation. This included, among other things, its own water pipe, its own schoolhouse, expansion of roads and street lighting. The negotiations dragged on until 1907, but the city finally recognized an opportunity for urban development to the west in the large district (2.8 km²). On January 1, 1908, the place was incorporated.
From the 1970s, a second focus of the district emerged with the development in the Bischofslinde area , with the Catholic Church of St. Albert and the Anne Frank School. To the north of it, the student settlement of the Studentenwerk was built. The district received a further boost in 1986 by the Baden-Württemberg State Horticultural Show , for which the Seepark was created on an area around the Flückigersee , a former quarry pond and became a spacious local recreation area.
Infrastructure
On the southern edge of the district there are allotment gardens, in the northwest on the grounds of the State Garden Show of 1986 the Seepark around the Flückiger See, where Freiburg's largest swimming pool is located with the indoor pool West. There are numerous student apartments in the district , including in the student housing estate (StuSie) and the Ulrich-Zasius-Haus of the Freiburg Student Union .
The Freiburg West Stadium of Sportfreunde Eintracht Freiburg eV with around 3300 seats is located in the north-eastern part of the district .
Betzenhausen is connected to local public transport by the central tram line 1 and line 3 on the eastern edge of the district. Due to its location on the edge of the western bypass road of Freiburg as well as the Autobahn feeder in Mitte , Betzenhausen can be reached via two expressways.
In the east of Betzenhausen, in the Bischofslinde district, an administrative center was built in the 1980s, which includes the Freiburg police department and the chemical and veterinary examination office as well as the new building for the Freiburg regional council from 2000.
Buildings
The Church of St. Thomas was built in 1767/68 by the Baroque master builder Johann Baptist Häring and is consecrated to the doubting Apostle Thomas . A stork's nest on the church tower is regularly populated by storks .
