Waldsee is a district of Freiburg im Breisgau with a resident population of around 5,400 in the east of the city. It is named after the local recreation area of the same name in its area. It lies between the districts of Wiehre and Oberau in the west and the districts of Littenweiler and Ebnet in the east. In the north and south it is bordered by the mountains of the Dreisamtal . The Dreisam flows through the district from east to west and is the northern limit of the development here.

history

The history of the district begins after the First World War, when the largely agricultural area between the city and the village of Littenweiler, which was independent until 1914, was gradually opened up in the style of a garden city . Previously, only the Carthusian monastery stood on the north side of the valley floor and the Zum Schiff inn, built in 1777, on the road that led into the Black Forest . A local recreation area around a small former ice pond, the eponymous forest lake with an excursion restaurant, was created on the south side around 1900. The soccer stadium for the Freiburg soccer club was also built nearby. A long-abandoned stop at the nearby Höllentalbahn made these facilities easy to reach. From 1905, this was also the end point (with a first turning loop ) of a tram route that was to be extended in the direction of Littenweiler in 1925, thus making the emerging Waldsee district accessible.

Between the two world wars, numerous streets were laid out and developed from the “Schiff” inn up to about the level of today's Dreifaltigkeitskirche, in which loosely developed buildings with large gardens prevailed. Along the Dreisam, various sports facilities were laid out in the 1930s, including in 1925 for the university with a sports hall in clinker construction, designed by architect Hermann Alker based on the Bauhaus style . To the east of the sports facilities was the "Strandbad" built in 1934, at the time one of the most modern outdoor pools in southern Germany was built; Because of the lack of separation of the women's and men's baths, there were initially protests from the Catholic side. In 1939 the area, which until then was called Freiburg-Ost , was divided into the four districts of Oberwiehre, Oberau, Waldsee and Littenweiler (although Littenweiler had already been a separate place before that).

In the 1950s, development continued to the east until it bordered on the Littenweiler district in the 1960s. In the 1990s, the district made a name for itself with numerous, sometimes violent, protest actions against the planned and then realized new construction of the B 31 -Ost. On the one hand, this new street was supposed to relieve residential areas of long-distance traffic (which was also successful), on the other hand, it created new burdens for other residents and also reduced the high recreational value of the district, quite apart from the fact that this new street - four lanes and free of intersections - entails additional stressful long-distance traffic the city brings.

Buildings and facilities

Inner courtyard of the Kartaus

The Kartaus , a former Carthusian monastery founded in 1347 and closed in 1783, is the most striking historical building in the district. All that remains of the monastery is the baroque style prelate building in which the pastor and local writer Heinrich Hansjakob lived for a time. Below the monastery, a hydroelectric power station was built in 1908, known as the “Freiburger Stromschlössle” because of its distinctive design. Next to it is an old farm with the typical Black Forest half-hipped roof , formerly the monastery economic building. These buildings form a particularly attractive ensemble of buildings at the foot of the Johannisberg . The UWC Robert Bosch College has been housed on the premises of the former monastery since 2014 .

In 1905/06, near the Gasthaus zum Schiff, the food manufacturer Wilhelm Schenk had architect Martin Dülfer build a villa with a garden, also designed by Dülfer, in largely open surroundings. The building, which is now somewhat hidden between the Black Forest and Hansjakobstrasse, has largely been preserved in its original state and is one of the most beautiful Art Nouveau villas in Freiburg. Due to the later use by a Catholic congregation of sisters, a chapel was added, which served the parish curate of St. Carolus as the nucleus of the later congregation of the Holy Trinity as a place of worship. Today the St. Carolus kindergarten of the Holy Trinity Congregation is housed in the villa. Not far from the villa is another striking building, the "Badische Heimat" house, which was planned in 1926 by architect Carl Anton Meckel in the neo-baroque style. It is particularly noticeable in this environment because of its unusually high and steep pitched roof and the richly decorated basket grids in front of the windows on the ground floor.

Römerhof
Trinity Church

Another building erected in the open during the construction period is also on Hansjakobstrasse. It is the "Römerhof", built in 1925, which is striking because of its size, but above all because of its shape, a hunched Zollinger roof. An inn was set up here for a long time; today, school facilities are housed in the building.

Most of all, the Trinity Church, planned by architect Gregor Schroeder and consecrated in 1953, protrudes above the surrounding buildings, the spiritual focal point for Catholics in the central location of the residential area. Towards the end of the 20th century, the church was supplemented by a parish hall and the "cella", a spiritual center.

On the occasion of the relocation of the Freiburg exhibition center to the west, the city decided at the end of the 1990s to open up the "old measuring site" adjacent to the Waldsee area. With the development, the market and center concept of the city of Freiburg, which provides for consumer-oriented supply in the districts, was advanced. The shopping center ZO (Center Oberwiehre), which opened at the “Alter Messplatz” in 2004, was designed by the Freiburg architects Melder & Binkert. There are larger facilities for the elderly in the district. The Johannisheim bei der Kartaus , built in 1969, is a retirement and nursing home; the Laubenhof is another facility for assisted living for older people who can live here in the midst of families. Unfortunately, the complex, built in the early 1980s, had such structural damage that it had to be demolished. A nursing home was built here as a replacement, the Katharina Egg house , which was moved into in December 2008. Old people who were previously cared for in the Kartaus are also housed here . Since 1997 there has also been the senior housing complex for assisted living "Kreuzsteinäcker" on the eastern edge of the district, right next to the terminus of the tram line 1. All the facilities mentioned are operated by the Heiliggeistspitalstiftung Freiburg.

education

Berthold High School

The humanistic Berthold-Gymnasium , the oldest higher educational institution in Freiburg, was rebuilt in 1957 to replace the school building on the Dreisam, located in the city center and completely destroyed in the Second World War. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the German-French high school in the Oberau district .

There are also three private schools in the district: The International Secondary School in Römerhof (formerly “Werk- und Sprachschule”), supported by the Caritas Association, is a private secondary school for teenagers and young adults aged 15 to 25 (grades 8 and 9 as well as international preparatory classes). She teaches migrants, early school leavers and German young people without a secondary school diploma who are too old for regular school. The Kapriole is a private primary and secondary school with a Werkrealschule and is one of the democratic schools . Germany's first primary sports school has existed since 2007 on the grounds of the Freiburger Turnerschaft von 1844 e. V. Most of the children from Waldsee have to attend schools in the neighboring districts.

sport and freetime

Lido on the Black Forest Road

The Waldsee district is characterized by sports facilities: in the south the Möslestadion , the former venue of the Freiburg football club (FFC), which today serves as the football school of SC Freiburg . Its stadium is located on the Dreisam and is now called " Schwarzwald-Stadion " (formerly Dreisamstadion) after one of the club's main sponsors from the 1st Bundesliga . Right next to it is the "Strandbad", built in 1934, Freiburg's largest outdoor pool. Further sports facilities of various clubs, including the Freiburg Gymnastics Federation from 1844, and the university are attached to the football stadium in the west. The Freiburg-Black Forest Olympic base is also housed in the Georg-Thoma-Haus on the premises of the university sports facilities .

In addition to the sports facilities mentioned, there are other leisure facilities: The youth hostel with 350 beds in 102 rooms, a large hall and a conference room, which also offers good opportunities for games and exercise in the open-air area, is located on the edge of the forest opposite the Freiburg Sport Club stadium . The building, which went into operation in 1978, was renovated and expanded from 2015 to 2017. In the forest on the north side is the St. Ottilien excursion restaurant, which is also popular from the city as a walking destination, which is located next to a small church associated with the legend of St. Odilia from Alsace and where a spring provides healing water for the eyes should. Old frescoes have been exposed in the last few decades.

In the south is the Waldsee with boat rental and restaurant, which also attracts a young audience with its concert program. The Möslepark, which is cut through by the Höllentalbahn railway line, connects to the Waldsee. The separated northern area is now called Konrad-Guenther-Park , which was badly affected by the controversial new construction of the B31-Ost. In the area of the district, the expressway runs openly between the two tunnels in the neighboring districts of Oberwiehre and Littenweiler, which leads to a burden for the residents and a reduction in the high recreational value. To the south of the railway line there is also a campsite and a forest spa with an extensive sauna area .

traffic

The main axis of the district is Hansjakobstraße, from which the residential area is mainly accessed. There is also a light rail line that connects with the rest of the city. The old federal road was downgraded to a local access road, which on the one hand relieves the district. Instead, the new building in another place created new burdens for other residents. The new federal road 31 has no access in the area of the district. The Höllentalbahn , which crosses the district on the south side, can be easily reached from the nearby Freiburg-Littenweiler train station.

At the Dreisam

Sand trap

In the northeast of the district is the sand trap on the Dreisam ; here the river was led into a basin so that sand and gravel carried along could settle. This facility no longer exists. At this point a road bridge crosses the river. Immediately to the west of the bridge, a small power plant was built on the left bank in 2008 , which generates around 300,000 kWh of electricity annually via a hydropower screw; this can cover the needs of around 120 households. The hydropower screw is 8 meters long and has a diameter of 3.10 meters; this makes it one of the largest plants of its kind in Germany.

Immediately to the east of the bridge, on the right bank of the river, the commercial canal is diverted, which already in the Middle Ages supplied energy for businesses (mills, garnet grinding, tannery, dyeing, etc.) south and east of Freiburg's old town. Today the water of the canal is used to operate several small power plants. The water for the Freiburg Bächle is also derived from this canal (in the Oberau district) .
