The Dreifaltigkeitskirche in Freiburg im Breisgau is the parish church of the Catholic population in Freiburg's Waldsee district . It was built in 1952/53 and consecrated on October 18, 1953 by the then Auxiliary Bishop Eugen Seiterich . It was the first Catholic church to be built in Freiburg after the Second World War and was designed by the architect Gregor Schroeder , who lived in the municipality.

Exterior

The traditional building in the style of a basilica - 43.40 m long and 18.62 m wide - extends from north to south. The choir in the south has moved in; on the west side is the massive tower with a ridge facing west-east, which has a height of 36.40 meters and is equipped with five bells. A side chapel is built on the east side and is consecrated to the two parish patrons, Nikolaus von der Flüe and Karl Borromäus . The facade in the north has a vestibule, above which there is a rose window with a diameter of six meters. Next to the main portal under the vestibule with 24 bronze plaques designed by Alfred Erhart , under which the topic “ECCLESIA PRAEFIGURATA” (Representations of the Church - in the Old Testament) can be read, there are two side entrances. through which the church is normally entered. On the long sides of the nave there are two other small portals, which are usually closed. The portal on the east side enables barrier-free access to the church.

Interior

Trinity Church, interior

The overall unadorned interior of the church with an original capacity of 600 seats is characterized by round arches as a design element: a large arch separates the choir from the nave, the aisles are divided by round arches, the high, narrow windows with tinted glass ornaments have a round arch at the top.

When entering the church, the fresco of the 13 m high and almost 10 m wide choir wall, designed by the local painter Rudolf Kaufhold, immediately catches the eye. It shows Christ as a young man in a large round mandorla , surrounded by saints, of whom only the closest, Mary and John the Baptist, can be identified as individuals. Above the mandorla you can see the symbols of God the Father (eye) and Holy Spirit (dove). The mandorla is carried by two winged beings, the linear, lighter looking up, the right, darker bowing deeply, both with eyes on the wings and encircled by circles. They remind of the "four living beings" with wings, "outside and inside full of eyes", the Revelation of John (4.8 EU ).

In the church, on the front wall of the right aisle, there is a copy of a wooden, unmounted Gothic Madonna statue with child , the original of which is in the Augustinian Museum in Freiburg.

After the 2nd Vatican Council , changes were made in the choir room to do justice to the new liturgical understanding: the altar was moved towards the congregation, the two anvils and the communion bench were removed. On this occasion, the side chapel was also changed and enlarged.

In 2017 the congregation made another change: the altar was moved into the nave in order to connect the worship even more closely with the believers. Some seats were lost. The baptismal font, which stood in the central axis opposite the altar, right at the entrance to the church, was now placed in the choir in front of the large mural.

The rose window in the back wall of the church shows a representation of the heavenly Jerusalem in the strong colors of medieval windows . It was designed by Albert Birkle . The design of the liturgical inventory comes from Karl Rißler.

The simple organ with an even arrangement of the organ pipes on the rear gallery to the right and left of the rose window was built in 1955 by the organ building workshop Dold from Freiburg and comprises 25 stops on two manuals and pedal .

Bells

When the church was consecrated in 1953, only one bell hung in the church tower, on loan from the Friedrich Wilhelm Schilling bell foundry , Heidelberg. In 1958 the angelus bell was still the only bell to be hung, and in 1962 it could be supplemented with four more bells to make a complete five-part ring. All bells come from the Schilling foundry and are hung in a steel bell cage.

Parish

The parish was established as the parish curate of the Maria-Hilf parish in 1950. The St. Carolus chapel in Hansjakobstraße was used until the church was built. In 1961 the community was raised to a parish. Since January 1, 2015, it has been part of the Catholic parish Freiburg Ost, which also includes the parishes of St. Barbara ( Littenweiler ), St. Peter and Paul ( Kappel ) and St. Hilarius ( Ebnet ).

Surroundings

To the south of the church are the parish hall and the "Cella", a spiritual center that is looked after by the Erlenbad Franciscan Sisters . The parish office is also located here. Both buildings were constructed in the 1990s.

In addition, there are youth rooms in the so-called “former parish hall” under the tower and the choir of the church, which are used by the KjG of the community and the altar boys.
