On election day, Baird received 45% of the vote and consequently missed the mandate for the British House of Commons . In the following general election in 1886 , he gained around 12% of the votes and moved into the House of Commons for the first time. In the following elections in 1892 and 1895 , Baird held his mandate against changing liberal opponents. After there was no opponent in the 1900 elections in the Glasgow Central constituency, the Liberal Andrew Mitchell Torrance stood against Baird in the subsequent general election in 1906 . This won the majority of votes and Baird left the House of Commons.
