Life
Torrance was born in Cumnock, Ayrshire in 1845 . He attended Cumnock Parish School and began training at the age of 16 in the textile company Peter Kelso & Co. in Glasgow . He then moved to London and was responsible for the company Anderson & Co. Smith, operates. In 1875 Torrance became a partner in the company and was renamed Miller, Son, & Torrance . In 1903 he was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of London and in 1906 he was promoted to Knight Bachelor . He died in 1909.
Political career
In the late 19th century, Torrance was active in local politics. So he held the office of Mayor of the London borough of Islington twice . He was also vice chairman, vice chairman and eventually chairman of the London City Council. In the general election in 1900 , Torrance first ran for elections at the national level. For the Liberal Party, he applied for the mandate of the Islington East constituency . Here he stood against the conservative Benjamin Cohen , who represented the constituency since 1892 in the British House of Commons . He was clearly defeated by the Conservative and thus missed entry into the House of Commons. In the following elections in 1906 , Torrance stood in the Glasgow Central constituency against the conservative John George Alexander Baird , who had held the constituency's mandate since 1886. With a share of the votes of 51.7%, Torrance achieved a majority of the votes and subsequently received a seat in the House of Commons. Since he died before the end of the electoral term, by-elections were held in the constituency. This was won by the Conservative Charles Dickson in front of Torrance's party colleague Thomas Gibson Bowles .
