Cumnock ( Gaelic : Cumnag ) is a town in the center of the Scottish Council Area East Ayrshire . It is located at the confluence of Glaisnock Water and Lugar Water around 20 km southeast of Kilmarnock and 60 km northwest of Dumfries .
history
In 1509 Cumnock received the rights of a Burgh of Barony . The city developed in connection with various industries such as coal and gas extraction and weaving. The production of snuffboxes, pottery and agricultural implements have also been important in the past. Various markets were held regularly in the city during the 19th century. In 1873, mining of ferrous rocks began in Cumnock, but was abandoned after around 30 years. In the 20th century, the industrial structure changed to the production of clothing and yarn. Electronics companies were added later. In addition, the mining of mineral resources, this time in open pit mining, has been resumed.
traffic
Cumnock is located at the intersection of two trunk roads, the A70 and the A76 . As early as the 19th century, the city received its own train station along the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway . However, it was closed in 1965 as part of the Beeching Ax .
