The road branches off the A75 road (part of the European route 18 ) at the Dumfries bypass to the north and follows the course of the River Nith to Thornhill , where it crosses the A702 road (with a short common route). It continues up the Nithsdale into the Southern Uplands to Sanquhar and New Cumnock , where it leaves Nithsdale. On the bypass (bypass) from Holmhead and Auchinleck is A70 road crossed. South-east of Kilmarnock the road crosses the A719 road and finally meets the A71 road when it joins the A77 road .
