Sanquhar ( Gaelic : An t-Seann Chathair , "Old Fort") is a town in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway and has 2021 inhabitants (as of 2011).
Sanquhar is in the valley of the River Nith and on the A76 which connects the cities of Kilmarnock and Dumfries .
The city was officially founded in 1598 with a Royal Charter , but traces of settlement can be found as early as the 8th century. Sanquhar is also home to the world's oldest post office, which opened in the 17th century.
