Lugar Water at Wallace's Cave |
||
The Lugar Water , in Gaelic Uisge lugar , also River Lugar , is a river in Scotland . It is created by the confluence of Bellow Water and Glenmuir Water north of Lugar . Both rivers have their source in the hills of the Southern Uplands in East Ayrshire .
River course
The river crosses the small mining village of Lugar. Gas lighting pioneer William Murdoch was born there in 1974 in Bellow Mill . A cave in which he carried out numerous experiments can be seen on the river bank. The river continues to flow through the town of Cumnock . Under the Woodroad Viaduct , it was previously used to drive mills. The Glaisnock Water flows into the Lugar here.
The river continues through the lands of the Marquess of Bute , Dumfries Estate . There he passes the ornate Lochnorris Bridge designed by John Adam . He now reaches the village of Ochiltree . The weir there once dammed the water for flour mills. A fish ladder has been set up for the ascent of the salmon to their spawning grounds upstream . The river is a fishing area for brown trout . In May 2014 the Ayrshire Rivers Trust reported that barbel invasive in the area had been caught in the river.
The river now reaches a gorge in red sandstone. On the cliffs above the river are the ruins of Auchinleck Castle , below is Wallace's Cave , where William Wallace is said to have hidden from his pursuers.
The river flows into the River Ayr .
Wildlife
Kingfisher , dipper , white wagtail , yellow wagtail , chaffinch , goldfinch and wren live on the riverbank .
