history

Alexander Boswell, Lord Auchinleck

The settlement of the Auchinleck lands as a mansion can be traced back to the 13th century. The medieval Tower House Auchinleck Castle on the banks of the Lugar Water , of which only a few remains have survived to this day, dates from this time . It was used until the early 17th century and replaced by another tower house, which is now known as the Auchinleck Old House . Today's Auchinleck House was built around 1760 and replaced the Tower House.

Auchinleck House was built by Alexander Boswell, Lord Auchinleck , a member of the Scottish Supreme Court. As can be inferred from received correspondence, Auchinleck House was not yet completed in 1767, but was already habitable. After Boswell's death, the property fell to his son, the writer and lawyer James Boswell , who, following his father, acted as laird .

description

Auchinleck House is isolated around two kilometers north of Ochiltree. The Scottish architect Robert Adam is probably responsible for the design. Four flat, Ionic pilasters adorn the east-facing front. They have a richly ornamented triangular gable . The central entrance area is accessible via a stone front staircase with a balustrade . Pavilions protrude on both sides and are connected to the main building by a curtain wall. These are designed with triangular gables and open, open turrets.
