Eric Caldow (born May 14, 1934 in Cumnock , † March 4, 2019 ) was a Scottish football player and coach . The five-time Scottish champion and long-time full-back of the Glasgow Rangers completed 40 international matches for the Scottish national team and took part in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden .

Player career

Caldow attended Cumnock Academy in his home in East Ayrshire and was spotted by the Glasgow Rangers at the age of 14. However, the Scottish club initially let Caldow play with the Muirkirk Juniors and then signed him at the age of 18. The full- back made his debut at the side of successful players such as Willie Woodburn , Sammy Cox and Willie Waddell on September 12, 1952 in a 4-2 win at Ibrox Stadium at home against Ayr United and made 13 competitive games in the first season. During the subsequent season 1953/54 he was in a total of 41 Rangers games twelve times on the field.

On the right full-back position Caldow was a regular player from the 1955/56 season and won his first Scottish championship. He was able to defend this title in the subsequent championship round in 1956/57 and he increased his number of appearances in competitive games from 35 to 40 - whereby he was now mostly used on the left side of defense, as Bobby Shearer , another right-back had been bought by Hamilton Academical . At the end of the second championship season he also came to Wembley for a first international match against England , which was lost 2-1. In addition to his strength in duels, he had made a name for himself through his speed.

The increased status could then be seen in his 49 missions in the 1957/58 season ; including four games in the European Cup against AS Saint-Étienne and AC Milan . However, he won no titles and at the Soccer World Cup in Sweden in 1958, Caldow played all three group games against Yugoslavia , Paraguay and France , but won none of them and was eliminated with his team prematurely. Back in Scotland, he won his third championship in the 1958/59 season and only missed one game.

After the three Scottish championships , Caldow won his first Scottish Cup with the Rangers in 1960 . Although he was unable to defend the championship title, he and his team made it to the semifinals in the European championship competition after victories against RSC Anderlecht , Red Star Bratislava and Sparta Rotterdam - and finally lost there significantly against Eintracht Frankfurt . In the following year he was in the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup, which was held for the first time, and after previous victories against Ferencváros Budapest , Borussia Mönchengladbach and Wolverhampton Wanderers lost 4-1 on a return match against Fiorentina . In the defensive alliance of the Rangers Caldow was besides Bill Paterson the only player who had not fallen victim to the fundamental rebuilding of coach Scot Symon , and meanwhile matured to captain . Overall, he was absent from just one competitive game and now won the first league cup in addition to his fourth Scottish championship title .

Behind the new surprise champions FC Dundee , Caldow won “only” the runner-up title with the Rangers a year later. But both domestic cup trophies could be won. At European level, he moved into the quarter-finals in the national championship competition and lost there against Standard Liège . Caldow won his fifth and final championship title in the 1962/63 season , which at the same time ushered in the end of his career with the Rangers. Ironically, in the 2-1 away win on April 6, 1963 against the selection of England at Wembley Stadium, he suffered a triple broken leg after a duel with Bobby Smith . The 40th international match - 14 of them as captain - finally brought his six-year national team career to an early end, although he was only missing two games after his debut.

The healing was slow and so he only came to four missions in the 1963/64 season . He was represented on the left back by David Provan . It was not until the 1964/65 season that he fought his way back - Provan changed sides - and after a 2-1 win against Celtic Glasgow, he won the league cup, the last trophy of his active career. He also made it to the quarter-finals in the European Cup , where he was eliminated with the Rangers with 2: 3 goals despite a 1-0 home win against Inter Milan in the addition of both games. The championship round ended four places behind FC Kilmarnock only in 5th place and in the 1965/66 season Caldow only made three games. It was his last season with the Rangers and it ended for him after 407 games in 13 years on March 9, 1966 with a 2-3 defeat against FC Falkirk .

He let his active career end with Stirling Albion before he hired in 1968 as a player-coach at the English club Corby Town.

After the active career

After the engagement in Corby he returned to his homeland Ayrshire and coached Hurlford United from 1970. Three years later he moved to the Scottish second division and looked after FC Stranraer . He left this again in 1975 and only appeared again as a scout for the Queens Park Rangers in the football business.
