The Scottish League Cup was played for the 19th time in 1964/65 . The Scottish Football League Cup, which was played among the participants of the Scottish Football League , began on August 8, 1964 and ended with the final on October 24, 1964 in Hampden Park in Glasgow . As the defending champion, the Glasgow Rangers started the competition which had prevailed against Greenock Morton in the previous year's final . In this year's final, the Rangers faced Celtic Glasgow in the Old Firm Derby . The Rangers reached the final of the League Cup for the eighth time after 1947 , 1949 , 1952 , 1958 , 1961 , 1962 and 1964 . After 1957 and the "Hampden in the Sun" of 1958, Celtic reached the league cup final for the third time. Celtic was able to reach the finals fourteen times in a row by 1978. In the following two years, the two arch-rivals also faced each other in the final. The Rangers won the final 2-1 and took the title for the sixth time. In the Scottish championship , both Glasgow clubs disappointed with fifth and eighth. Celtic won the Scottish Cup against Dunfermline Athletic .
