The Scottish League Cup was played for the 25th time in 1970/71 . The Scottish Football League Cup, which was played among the participants of the Scottish Football League , began on August 8, 1970 and ended with the final on October 24, 1970 in Hampden Park in Glasgow . As the defending champion, Celtic Glasgow started the competition that had prevailed against FC St. Johnstone in last year's final . In this year's final, Celtic met the Glasgow Rangers at the Old Firm . It was after 1958 , 1965 , 1966and in 1967 the fifth Old Firm final in the League Cup. For Celtic it was the seventh consecutive final since 1965 and the ninth overall since 1957 . The Rangers reached the final for the eleventh time, the first time in 1947 , the last time in 1967. The Rangers won the final 1-0 with a goal from 16-year-old Derek Johnstone . It was the seventh league cup triumph for the Gers , who caught up with Celtic . For the last time a final in the League Cup reached over 100,000 spectators. In the 1970/71 season , Celtic became Scottish champions , and won the cup final against the Rangers . Due to the victory in the championship, Celtic took part in the European Cup in the following season , the Rangers as cup winners in the European Cup Winners' Cup . Celtic was eliminated in the semi-finals against Inter Milan . The Rangers won the cup winners' competition in the final against FK Dynamo Moscow for the first and only time to date.
