The Scottish League Cup was played for the 43rd time in 1988/89 . The Scottish League Cup, which was played among the participants of the Scottish Football League , began on August 10, 1988 and ended with the final on October 23, 1988. If a duel was not decided after 90 minutes plus extra time, it came to penalties. The Glasgow Rangers won the title for the 16th time in the club's history in the final against FC Aberdeen . For the Rangers it was the third league cup victory in a row after 1986/87 and 1987/88 .
