The Scottish League Cup was played for the 26th time in 1971/72 . The Scottish Football League Cup, which was played among the participants of the Scottish Football League , began on August 14, 1971 and ended with the final on October 23, 1971 in Hampden Park in Glasgow . As the defending champion, the Glasgow Rangers started the competition who had prevailed against Celtic in the previous year's final at the Old Firm . In this year's final, Partick Thistle and Celtic Glasgow met in the small Glasgow Derby . For the Jags it was the fourth final in the League Cup after 1954 , 1957 and 1959 . All three finals were lost. Celtic reached the league cup final for the ninth time in a row since 1965 , and the 11th overall since 1957. This year's final was won by the Jags with a 4-1 win over the favored Bhoys , creating one of the biggest surprises in Scottish football . The club from the Glasgow district of Maryhill won the League Cup in Scotland for the first time after three final defeats. After winning the Scottish Cup in 1921, it was the greatest success in the club's history. The Bhoys in Green from the Parkhead district lost for the second time in a row the final in the League Cup. In the 1971/72 season, the defeated Celtics won the double from the Scottish championship and cup . Celtic took part as champions in the following season in the European Cup and was eliminated in the second round against the Hungarian champions Újpesti Dózsa SC . League cup winner Partick Thistle took part in the UEFA Cup and was eliminated in the first round against Honvéd Budapest .
