The Scottish FA Cup was played for the 87th time in 1971/72 . The most important Scottish football cup competition, which was directed and hosted by the Scottish Football Association, began on December 8, 1971 and ended with the final on May 6, 1972 in Hampden Park in Glasgow . Record winner Celtic Glasgow started the competition as defending champion . In the previous year's final , the Bhoys had prevailed against the Rangers in the Old Firm . In this year's Scottish Cup final, Celtic and Hibernian Edinburgh faced each other. For Celtic it was the fourth entry into the Scottish Cup final in a row, by 1975 there were eight finals in a row. With a 6-1 win by Celtic , the club won its 22nd Scottish FA Cup , which further expanded the record of cup victories. The first triumph in the national cup came for the Bhoys in green in 1892 . The result in this year's final meant the highest final victory in the Scottish FA Cup during the 20th century . The for Celtic playing striker John Dean was the first player in the history of Scottish football in a final of the Scottish Cup , and in the Scottish League Cup achieved a hat-trick. It was the penultimate Scottish Cup final that was attended by more than 100,000 spectators. In the 1971/72 season , Celtic won the Scottish Championship and the Cup, and the team was in the league cup final that was lost to Partick Thistle . By winning the championship, Celtic took part in the European Cup. The defeated Hibs took part in the European Cup Winners' Cup and reached the quarter-finals there.
