The Scottish FA Cup was played for the 92nd time in 1976/77 . The most important Scottish football cup competition, which was directed and hosted by the Scottish Football Association, began on December 18, 1976 and ended with the final on May 7, 1977 in Glasgow's Hampden Park . As the defending champion, the Glasgow Rangers started the competition, which prevailed against Heart of Midlothian in the previous year's final . In this year's final of the Scottish Cup, the Rangers were again in the final this time against Celtic in the Old Firm derby. In the eleventh final derby between the two clubs since their first encounter in the cup final in 1893/94 , Celtic was able to decide the game 1-0 with a penalty from Andy Lynch . In the season 1976/77 won Celtic the double of League and Cup . Because of the victory in the championship, Celtic took part in the European Cup of National Champions 1977/78 , the Rangers as the loser of the final in the European Cup Winners' Cup .
