The Scottish FA Cup was played for the 102nd time in 1986/87 . The most important Scottish football cup competition, which was directed by the Scottish Football Association, began on December 6, 1986 and ended with the final on May 16, 1987 in Hampden Park in Glasgow. FC Aberdeen started as defending champions in the competition, which prevailed against Heart of Midlothian in the final last year and won the Scottish Cup for the sixth time. In the final of this year's event, FC St. Mirren and Dundee United faced each other. The Saints from Paisley won the finals with a 1: 0 victory after extra time with a goal by Ian Ferguson , and won for the third time after 1926 and 1959 the Cup in Scotland. By winning the cup, the club took part in the European Cup Winners' Cup the following year , and was eliminated in the second round from the eventual winners from Belgium, KV Mechelen .
