The Scottish FA Cup was played for the 131st time in 2015/16 . The main Scottish football cup competition, officially held as the William Hill Scottish Cup and run by the Scottish Football Association, began on August 15, 2015 and ended with the final on May 21, 2016 in Hampden Park, Glasgow. For the first time in the history of the competition, there were two preliminary rounds (qualifying rounds). The defending champion was Inverness Caledonian Thistle , who won in the previous year's final against second division club FC Falkirk . In this year's Scottish Cup final, two second division teams faced each other in a final for the first time in history: Glasgow Rangers and Hibernian Edinburgh . For the Rangers , who were successful in the semifinals against Celtic at the Old Firm , it was the 52nd cup final since 1877 and the first since 2009 . The Rangers had previously secured promotion to the Scottish Premiership and victory in the Challenge Cup against FC Peterhead . The Hibs reached the final for the 14th time since 1887 . After the third finals in 1902 , all ten other finals were lost. The Hibs lost a month earlier, in March 2016, in the Scottish League Cup final against Ross County . The Hibs won the cup final 3-2. It was the first cup win in 114 years and the third overall after 1887 and 1902. The Rangers lost a final in the Scottish Cup for the first time since 1998 . As cup winners, the Hibs took part in the Europa League the following season , which means that for the first time since 2009 , Queen of the South, a Scottish second division team, qualified for the European Cup. The Hibs were eliminated from the competition in the second qualifying round against the Danish first division club Brøndby IF .
