The Glasgow Rangers , who had prevailed against Heart of Midlothian in the previous year's final , started the competition as defending champions . In the final of the Scottish Cup, the Rangers and Celtic faced each other in the Old Firm derby. The Bhoys in Green won the Scottish Cup for the fourth time in the club's history with a 3-2 win. After 1894 and 1899 it was the third final derby for the two Glasgow clubs. The final was decided by a hat trick by Jimmy Quinn that went down in history as the Jimmy Quinn Final . Rangers defender Nicol Smith died of typhus a year after the final .
