William "Willie" Orr (born June 20, 1873 in Shotts , † February 26, 1946 ) was a Scottish football player and coach.

Career

player

Willie Orr was in 1873 in Shotts in the municipality of North Lanarkshire born about 27 kilometers southeast of Glasgow. He began his career at Airdrieonians FC where he played from at least 1893 to 1894. At that time, the club was not part of the Scottish Football League . In 1894 Orr moved to the English first division club Preston North End where he completed three seasons in the First Division . On May 1, 1897, Orr was signed by Celtic Glasgow . He made his debut on September 9, 1897 in a 4-1 home win in the league game against Hibernian Edinburgh . He was considered a thoughtful player who had an energetic approach to his personal game, which quickly became a huge asset for the club. He was the fourth team captain in Celtic history from 1903 to 1906, after James Kelly , Dan Doyle and Sandy McMahon . With Celtic he won the Scottish Championship five times and the Cup three times.

Trainer

After his career as an active player in 1908, Orr was active as a coach from 1921. From 1921 to 1926 he coached Airdrieonians FC. In the seasons 1922/23 , 1923/24 , 1924/25 and 1925/26 he led the team to the runner-up in Scotland. In 1924 he and his team won the cup final against Hibernian. In July 1926, Orr was appointed coach of Leicester City . He led City in the 1928/29 season to runner-up behind Sheffield Wednesday . The highest ranking from Leicester to winning the title in 2016 . Despite this success, he is one of Leicester City's least known coaches. In 1932 Orr returned to Scotland and coached Falkirk FC . In 1935 he was banned for life by the Scottish Football Association for a bribery scandal, the ban was lifted in February 1937, but Orr never returned to football. He died in 1946 at the age of 72.

National team

Willie Orr played once for the Scottish national team in 1903 . The international game he completed on March 21, 1903 in Celtic Park in Glasgow; it was lost 2-0 to Ireland .
