James Kelly (* 15. October 1865 in Renton ; † 20th February 1932 ) was a Scottish football player and - functionary and the first captain of Celtic Glasgow. He has won the Scottish Cup and the championship three times in his playing career . After retiring, Kelly became Chairman of Celtic Glasgow .

James Kelly was born to Irish parents who came to Scotland after the famine in Ireland in 1865 in Renton , West Dunbartonshire, about 30 kilometers northwest of Glasgow. The West Dunbartonshire region is considered to be the cradle of Scottish football. He began his career in his hometown with Renton FC, founded in 1872 . Kelly won the Scottish Cup with the club in 1885 and 1888 . On May 28, 1888 Kelly signed a contract with Celtic Glasgow that had been founded six months earlier in November 1887. He was given the honor of becoming the first team captain in the club's history. His father-in-law, Francis McErlean, was one of the founding fathers of Celtic . He led Celtic as captain to the first Old Firm derby in history on the same day he took to the field. Celtic won the game 5-2. With Celtic he won the Cup in 1892 , and the Scottish Championship in 1893 , 1894 and 1896 .

Kelly became director of Celtic at the age of 32 after retiring in 1897 and was president of the association from 1909 to 1914 . James Kelly is considered a Celtic Great . He contributed significantly to the economic and sporting rise of the club. Under his leadership, Celtic rose to the most successful Scottish football club alongside the Rangers. Until his death in February 1932 Kelly held various functions in the body of Celtic active.

National team

James Kelly played eight times for the Scottish national team from 1888 to 1896 and scored one goal. He made his debut for the Bravehearts on March 17, 1888 in a 5-0 defeat by England at Hampden Park in Glasgow.
