Albert Wilhelm Kukowka

Albert Wilhelm Kukowka (born April 25, 1894 in Sohrau , Upper Silesia , † November 8, 1977 in Greiz ) was a German doctor , balneologist and author of scientific studies on cancer development , as well as full professor of medicine and director of a hospital.

Life

After studying medicine and doing his doctorate, Kukowka studied the development of cancer cells. The result of these investigations was a work that was published in Vienna in 1932.

After the liberation from fascism , Kukowka received his habilitation and in 1946 was appointed medical director of the Greiz district hospital . Here he sat down u. a. for the fight against poliomyelitis ("polio"), which was still common at the time . Between 1947 and 1950 he also worked as epidemic commissioner for Thuringia. In 1954, Kukowka took on a teaching position at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . Between 1955 and 1960, Kukowka also headed the Research Institute for Balneology and Spa Science in Bad Elster . In 1964 he reached his retirement.

Kukowka also contributed to the further development of the iron lung . He published around 500 scientific papers.
