Daniel "Dan" Doyle (born September 16, 1864 in Paisley , † April 8, 1918 in Glasgow ) was a Scottish football player .

Career

Dan Doyle was born in 1864 to parents of Irish descent in the Scottish town of Paisley, about seven miles west of Glasgow . He moved from English champions Everton to Celtic Glasgow in 1891 . Previously he played with Hibernian Edinburgh and Grimsby Town, among others . In 1888 Doyle was involved in the death of a player while playing with Grimsby Town against Stevely, when he clashed with his opponent William Cropper and he died in the hospital a day later. A subsequent investigation triggered Doyle of any wrongdoing and found that it had been an accident. As a die-hard left-back, he was one of the best in the world at the time. Physically he was immensely strong and had the ability to play games. In Glasgow he was honored to become the second captain in the club's history after James Kelly . With Celtic he won the Cup in 1892 , and the Scottish Championship in 1893 , 1894 , 1896 and 1898 . After the end of his career, he suffered from alcohol problems and found himself gambling. At the time of his death, he was practically destitute. Dan Doyle died on 8 April 1918 at the age of 53 years in Glasgow to cancer .

National team

Dan Doyle played eight times for the Scottish national team between 1892 and 1898 . He made his debut for the Bravehearts on April 2, 1892 in a 4-1 loss to England at the Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow. With the national team he took part in the British Home Championship six times and was able to win the title in 1894 and 1897 .
