The Ibrox Stadium (until 1997 Ibrox Park ) is a football stadium in Glasgow , the largest city in Scotland . The home ground of Glasgow Rangers , in the UEFA - stadium category 4 was classified, holds 50,817 spectators. This makes the Ibrox Stadium, after Celtic Park and Hampden Park , the third largest football stadium in Scotland. The stadium is named after the Glasgow district of Ibrox , in which it is located.

history

Ibrox Park had 15,000 seats at the first Rangers game on this sports field on April 20, 1887. After moving to the current location in 1899 and an investment of 200,000 pounds , it initially had space for 75,000 spectators. When 26 people died in a tragedy in 1902, the number of spectators was reduced to 25,000. Then, according to a plan by Archibald Leitch, Ibrox Park was converted into an oval stadium for 63,000 visitors and increased to a capacity of 80,000 after the First World War . At that time, however, there were not infrequently 120,000 people in the stadium and this led to further accidents in 1961 and 1971, in which 66 people ( Ibrox disaster ) died and 145 were injured. Because of this, the audience was reduced to 65,000.

After 1971 it was decided to renovate the entire stadium and in 1981 the best master plans in Great Britain came about. The oval shape became the typical British square building, which cost ten million British pounds. Over the next ten years, £ 53 million was put into modernization, bringing the total to 50,467 viewers. The name of the stadium has changed from Ibrox Park to Ibrox Stadium in 1997.

The attendance record dates back to January 2, 1939, when the Rangers met Celtic Glasgow ( Old Firm ) in a league game and 118,567 spectators came to the stadium.
