The 1992/93 European Cup Winners 'Cup was the 33rd edition of the European Cup Winners' Cup. 36 club teams from 35 countries took part, including defending champions Werder Bremen , 31 national cup winners, 3 defeated cup finalists (Airdrieonians FC, FC Admira / Wacker, AIK Solna) and AS Monaco, which was designated by the French association to participate.
With the breakup of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia , representatives from Russia , Ukraine and Slovenia took part for the first time . Furthermore, representatives from Liechtenstein , Israel and the Faroe Islands were at the start for the first time .
For Germany, in addition to defending champion Werder Bremen, the DFB Cup winner and second division team Hannover 96 , from Austria the ÖFB Cup finalist FC Admira / Wacker , from Switzerland the cup winner FC Luzern and from Liechtenstein the cup winner FC Vaduz . The two German clubs met in the first round, when Hanover was eliminated by Bremen.
AC Parma won the final at Wembley Stadium in London 3-1 against FC Antwerp.
The top scorer was the Belgian Alexandre Czerniatynski from the finalist Royal Antwerp with seven goals.
mode
As usual, the participants played the winner in pure cup mode with home and return matches. If there was a tie after both games, the number of goals scored away decided ( away goal rule ). If their number was also the same, extra time took place in the second leg, in which the away goals rule also applied. If there was still a tie at the end of extra time, a penalty shoot- out was carried out. The final was decided in a game on a neutral court. In the event of a tie after extra time, the winner would also have been determined in a penalty shoot-out.
