The 1965/66 European Cup Winners 'Cup was the sixth draw of the European Cup Winners' Cup. 31 club teams from 30 countries took part, including defending champions West Ham United, 24 reigning cup winners and six defeated cup finalists (Deventer Go Ahead, Cardiff City, FC Floriana, Standard Liège, Limerick FC and 1. Wiener Neustädter SC).
The DFB Cup winner Borussia Dortmund from the Federal Republic of Germany, the FDGB Cup winner 1. FC Magdeburg from the GDR , the ÖFB Cup finalist 1. Wiener Neustädter SC from Austria and FC Sion from Switzerland took part in the competition.
Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool FC contested the final in Hampden Park in Glasgow on May 5, 1966. Dortmund won the game 2-1 after extra time and thus became the first German European Cup winner.
The top scorer was Lothar Emmerich from Borussia Dortmund with 14 goals, the highest number of goals a player could ever achieve in a single season of the European Cup Winners' Cup. He scored six goals in the 8-0 win against FC Floriana in the preliminary round.
mode
As usual, the participants played the winner in pure cup mode with home and return matches. The away goals rule was used for the first time this season . If there was a tie after two games, the number of goals scored away decided on progress. If their number was the same, a play-off took place in a neutral place after extra time in the second leg. The final was decided in a game on a neutral court. However, if the score was tied after extra time, a replay was scheduled because a penalty shoot-out was not yet planned.
