Floriana Football Club (short: Floriana FC ) is the oldest Maltese football club based in Floriana , the neighboring city of Malta's capital Valletta .
history
Founded in 1894, the club got its traditional colors through the stationing of Irish units (the Royal Irish Fusiliers ). Because of the club's friendlies against these troops and the resulting solidarity, the supporters were nicknamed "Ta'l-Irish". Since the establishment of the Maltese Football Association in 1900 , the club won numerous championships and national cup competitions and took part in all European competitions; 1962 as the first Maltese club ever (in the cup competition against Ujpest Dozsa Budapest ).
Over the years the club played in competitions against numerous internationally known European clubs.
In the last few years the sporting success dwindled; so the club had to compete against relegation several times in the relegation round even in the domestic league.

European Cup balance sheet
In its total of 27 appearances in the European Cup, the Floriana FC could only prevail once against another team (1993/94 with two 1-0 successes against the Lithuanian champions Ekranas Panevėžys) and otherwise always retired in the first round. In general, Floriana won only four games of his 62 encounters in the European Cup (with ten draws and 48 defeats), with the third success (also 1-0) in 1972 against the Hungarian cup winner Ferencváros Budapest. The Magyars corrected the balance of power with a 6-0 win in the second leg.
Every now and then the "Evergreens" were eliminated with narrow results (such as a 0-0 and 0-1 against Dundee United in the 1988/89 season, a 2-2 and 0-1 against the Sligo Rovers in the 1994 season / 95 or a 0: 2 and 0: 0 against FC Porto in qualifying for the 1993/94 Champions League season), but defeats were much more common: the highest was a 0:10 at Ipswich Town (1962), followed by a 0: 9 at Standard Liège (1981), a 2:10 at Újpest Budapest (1961) and several 0: 8 results (1965 at the eventual tournament winner Borussia Dortmund, 1973 at Club Bruges, 2011 against AEK Larnaka and 2012 at IF Elfsborg).
Other big names Floriana competed against in a European competition include Sporting Lisbon (1970), Hajduk Split (1975) and Inter Milan (1978).
Overall record: 65 games, 5 wins, 11 draws, 49 defeats, 36: 207 goals (goal difference −171)
