The Maltese Premier League (also called BOV Premier League for sponsorship reasons ), colloquially known as Il-Kampjonat, Il-Lig or Il-Premjer , is the top division in Maltese football. It currently consists of twelve teams. Before 1980 the first division was called First Division , today it is the name of the second division.
mode
The season extends from August to May of the following year and is played in two rounds. In the first round (First Round) all teams compete against each other twice, resulting in a total of 22 days game result. In the second round, the league is divided into two groups. The teams in places 1 to 6 play in a championship pool for the championship and international business, while the six remaining teams in a relegation pool determine two teams that are relegated to the Maltese First Division . In the second round, too, all teams within their group play two games against each other.
After the first round, the points earned by each team are halved. If a team emerges from the first round with 30 points, for example, it will start the second round with 15 points. If halving the points does not result in a whole number (e.g. 15 points → 7.5), the result is rounded up commercially .
